The International Christine de Pizan Society has two branches: North American and European. The North American Branch meets each year in May at the International Medieval Congress at Western Michigan University. The European Branch meets every three years for a colloquium held at a European university. The North American Branch of the International Christine de Pizan Society (NAB-ICPS) attained non-profit status (501(c)3) in the United States in 2003. Newly attributed MS illumination by the Master of the Cité des dames
(formerly London, British Library MS Phillips loan 36/199, now in private hands)
The illustration appears as the frontispiece to a manuscript of La Légende dorée, which is Jean de Vignay’s French translation (ca. 1333) of the Latin Golden Legend/Legenda Aurea. It depicts a man presenting his book to a queen, presumably meant to represent de Vignay and the queen who commissioned the translation, Jeanne de Bourgogne, wife of Philip VI de Valois. The illumination was first recognized as the work of the Master by art historian Hilary Maddocks.
The same Master produced the famous illumination that appears in MS Harley 4431 of Christine presenting her book to Queen Isabeau de Bavière.
The Master’s Légende dorée illumination is unique and important for several reasons. Although presentation pictures were common in secular works, this is the only example in a MS of the Légende Dorée. It is the only illumination by the Master in any MS of de Vignay’s Légende, and the sole illumination in this particular MS. Perhaps the Master made this unusual choice of subjects because he had earlier produced the famous presentation picture for Harley 4431 (ca. 1414); the Prologue to de Vignay’s translation indicates that this work was also presented to a queen. The secular subject matter may reflect the fact that the Master usually practiced his profession on secular books, including Christine’s.

The MS containing the illumination is discussed on pages 156-57; her transcription of de Vignay’s Prologue appears on page 248; and the picture appears as Figure 66.
